Nathaniel Givens, Editor
In second grade Nathaniel Givens’ teacher sent home a concerned note to his parents. Nathaniel is too serious, the teacher wrote, he acts as though the weight of the world is on his shoulders. Nathaniel has tried with occasional success to lighten up since then, but the sense of responsibility is what brings him to political activism time and time again despite his distaste for politics.
Nathaniel attended college from 1999 – 2000 then served a two-year religious mission in Hungary before returning and graduating with a degree in math in 2005. He immediately began working as a benefits analyst at an independent health insurance brokerage. While working there he completed a masters in systems engineering. In 2008 he moved to a major financial institution just in time to be laid off 6 months later in the aftermath of the financial meltdown. This was about the time that Nathaniel first started writing for America’s Right.
Although Nathaniel has been more or less conservative and politically active for most of his life, he has gone from calling himself a “radical moderate” in high school (it made sense at the time) to a classical liberal in the model of the Hayek and Friedman. He believes that government can play some small role in promoting the efficient operation of free markets, but in general agrees with Milton Friedman that “one of the great mistakes is to judge policies and programs by their intentions rather than their results” and with Justice Louis Brandies:
Experience should teach us to be most on our guard to protect liberty when the government’s purposes are beneficial. Men born to freedom are naturally alert to repel invasion of their liberty by evil-minded rulers. The greater dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding.
Nathaniel took his first stab at editing while Jeff was out of the country for a few weeks in 2009. He currently does his best to assist in getting fresh content and writers onto the virtual pages of America’s Right while balancing a full-time PhD program in economics, married life with two beautiful children, research, a start up software company, and aspirations as a fiction writer. Nathaniel also maintains a public Facebook Page.
