Daily Reminder: March 8, 2012

How do you negotiate with the irrational?” asked White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs at a March 2, 2010 press conference. He was referring to a last stand of sorts being taken by outgoing Kentucky Sen. Jim Bunning, who refused to balk in his insistence that the U.S. Senate, which had just passed a “pay-as-you-go” rule, be required to pay for a $10 billion “jobs” bill by cutting spending elsewhere.

“If we can’t find $10 billion to pay for something we all support,” Bunning said, “we will never pay for anything on the floor of this U.S. Senate.”

That the White House believed Bunning’s Last Stand to be “irrational,” that Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid decried it as political gamesmanship getting in the way of the way Washington works — well, that should tell you all you need to know about the Obama White House, this Democratic Party leadership, and the way Washington works as a whole.
