Daily Reminder: March 6, 2012

A few short weeks after sending a bust of Winston Churchill, given to and placed prominently in the Oval Office by George W. Bush, back to the British Embassy, President Barack Obama sent British PM Gordon Brown and his wife back to the UK from their first official visit to the Obama White House in March 2009 with what the British press derisively called a “blockbuster gift” – a box set of 25 DVDs that, as it turned out, were not even properly configured to work on European DVD players.

Contrast that with what was a thoughtful official gift from Brown to Obama: an ornamental pen holder crafted from the timbers of the HMS Gannet, a Victorian anti-slave ship and sister ship to the HMS Resolute, the source of the oak from which the desk in the Oval Office was carved.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, after receiving carefully selected children’s books from British authors and clothing from trendy British fashion house Topshop for their young daughters, Barack and Michelle Obama reciprocated by giving, to the Brown’s sons, a pair of models of the presidential helicopter, Marine One … available from the White House gift shop for $15 apiece.
