The Daily Caller: Ginni Thomas: I’m not leaving my Tea Party organization
Ginni Thomas, a conservative activist married to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, says she is not abandoning the Tea Party-affiliated organization she founded.
In an exclusive interview with The Daily Caller, Thomas publicly disclosed for the first time that she resigned on Thursday as the leader of her Liberty Central, but stressed that she still plans to spend the bulk of her time working as a consultant for the organization’s newly-formed alliance with the Patrick Henry Center for Individual Liberty.
One of my favorite things I’ve learned about Justice Clarence Thomas has nothing to do with law and politics. It’s about how he and his wife enjoy vacationing in their RV, and were forced to stop parking it overnight in Wal-Mart parking lots as they tooled around the country taking in the sights. The little anecdote has minimal political or legal significance, but it nonetheless stuck with me enough to make me look twice each and every time I see a recreational vehicle parked in the parking lot of my local Wal-Mart.
As for Ginni Thomas, I am delighted that she is involved as she is. And I’m even more delighted when I see that, through her effort and through groups like Liberty Central, the Tea Party movement is taking the foundational steps necessary to ensure that it is an expanding and lasting force in American politics.
Here is the press release I received today covering the alliance between Liberty Central and the Patrick Henry Center for Individual Liberty described in the Daily Caller piece:
WASHINGTON, D.C. — After wildly encouraging midterm election results, Liberty Central is thrilled to declare an exciting next step that will further energize the conservative grassroots movement. Effective today, Liberty Central will operate as a connected organization with the Patrick Henry Center for Individual Liberty, and move ahead with an even sharper, more responsive 2.0 phase. This formidable alliance marks a new and improved stage for both organizations, as they will enhance congressional outreach on behalf of an energized and expanding grassroots base. Liberty Central and the Patrick Henry Center are eager to grow grassroots impact through a virtual community of citizen activists that is supported by in-person influence on Capitol Hill. Liberty Central expects to have a dedicated team of ambassadors who will serve patriotic citizens in walking the halls of Congress to lobby for liberty, while the Patrick Henry Center supplies the much-needed educational component, including founding documents and inspirational stories about the Founding Fathers.
Both organizations have a passionate commitment to our founding principles. The Patrick Henry Center, a 501(c)(3) with 15 years of experience protecting and supporting all those who participate in Patrick Henry’s powerful legacy of free speech, political courage, and individual liberty, has grown in influence and scope over the years, including its most recent attendance and sponsorship at several major Tea Party and pro-liberty events. Its alliance with Liberty Central, an organization with 501(c)(4) tax status, will utilize different capacities to rouse citizen activism.
Liberty Central will keep its name and mission, and the staff will continue to enhance online citizen activism through ongoing improvements to its highly interactive website, www.libertycentral.org. Liberty Central staff will also promote grassroots participation with various accountability tools to hold newly elected members of Congress in line with the principles on which they were elected and ensure they will be responsive to the voters who elected them.
As part of this alliance, Patrick Henry Center Founder and President Gary Aldrich will assume leadership, overseeing day-to-day business functions. Liberty Central CEO and Founder Ginni Thomas will continue to play an influential role as a consultant to Liberty Central, drawing from the same vision and passion with which she founded Liberty Central to bridge the grassroots movement with Washington institutions and move the connected organizations forward. “I am thrilled with this alliance and the greater impact citizens will play in holding Congress accountable to our founding principles. Gary is a tenacious leader who will serve our cause with distinction,” said Ginni Thomas.
“The Patrick Henry Center for Individual Liberty has always exhibited a passion for liberty and to this end we have enjoyed activist participation and support since our founding. But today we face a perfect storm of financial distress, terrorism both foreign and domestic, and a very voracious federal government bureaucracy that seems forever dissatisfied with whatever fruits of our labor they demand we send in. Our current circumstances create a toxic atmosphere inhospitable to individual liberty. This alliance will allow us to join millions of others as we push back to restore and protect our basic rights as Americans,” said Gary Aldrich.
