BP = AQ?

Daily Mail: 9/11 families’ fury as Obama compares BP oil spill to Twin Towers attack

There’s really nothing I can add to this.

British families of 9/11 victims described Barack Obama as ‘cruel’ yesterday for comparing the terrorist outrage to the BP oil spill.

The U.S. president said there were ‘echoes’ between the Gulf of Mexico disaster and the Al Qaeda suicide attacks which killed 2,995 people, including 67 Britons.

He said that just as the events of September 11, 2001, had profoundly shaped ‘our view of our vulnerabilities and our foreign policy’, so the oil disaster would shape thinking on the environment and energy for years to come.

Those who lost loved ones when terrorists flew hijacked planes into the Twin Towers of New York’s World Trade Centre said Mr Obama’s remarks were yet another attempt to slur the UK.

  1. Monica says:

    I don’t think he was saying the oil spill is as horrific as 9/11. I think he was saying both the oil spill and 9/11 left us reconsidering our various policies.

    That being said, I think it’s a politically stupid idea to bring up 9/11 for any comparisons. Regardless of whether the comparisons are valid, people are going to get upset. I don’t see how you can ever come out ahead, politically, by comparing things to 9/11.

  2. Really? says:

    A pipe blowing up does not compare to a religion blowing up.

  3. Tory says:

    The Brits are quite justifiably sensitized to 0′s serial disrespect shown to them, but I don’t think he made his mindnumbingly, bewilderingly stupid comparison specifically to slur just the Brits…the magnitude of the casual effrontery in making that farfetched comparison is a slur to every thinking, rational person on the planet.

  4. Gail B. says:

    Well, think about it–9-11 was, indeed, a crisis of the highest magnitude for Americans, and Bush stepped forward, went after the radical Islamic terrorists, and thereby showed leadership which increased his approval rating.

    Obama is faced with a situation devastating the lives of Gulf Coast families and the revenues of the affected states, but Obama has no enemy to go after, no one’s “ass to kick” to stop the sinking approval rating so important to getting his agenda passed.
