Goldberg on Obama’s Socialism

Commentary Magazine: Jonah Goldberg: What Kind of Socialist is Barack Obama?

Given his conduct and rhetoric as president, we have every reason to reopen the question from 2008 and ask, quite simply, What kind of socialist is Barack Obama?

Now, when conservatives dare to suggest, tentatively or otherwise, that Obama or his party might be in the thrall of some variant of socialism, they are derided for it. In the wake of health care’s passage, for example, a Salon article mocked conservatives for thinking that Americans now live under “the Bolshevik heel.” When the RNC was debating its resolution in 2008, Robert Schlesinger, the opinion editor of U.S. News & World Report, responded: “What’s really both funny and scary about all of this is how seriously the fringe-nuts in the GOP take it.”

Brilliant, as if I would expect anything else from Mr. Goldberg.  Read it.

    What kind of socialist?

I cut to the chase and simply think of him as a Marxist.

I don’t like the way America is dividing because of him. I don’t like being called a racist because I want the Constitution upheld. I don’t like for Progressives to call conservatives degrading names and to tell boldface lies about us. I don’t like the Secretary of Homeland Security calling conservatives “domestic terrorists.” I don’t like the Obama Regime’s overreaching agenda. I don’t like what he’s doing to our Constitution. And, I’m VERY opposed to “Czars” in our government! There’s a whole lot more that I’m very uncomfortable about, but you get the idea.

Wish he could have just continued voting ‘present’ as President as well.

I agree, Gail; while it’s very refreshing to read such an discerning and penetrating piece, I think we’re—for all practical purposes— past the point of studying the academics of the variants of socialism and its cousins. The problem with 0 is that his ideology seemingly flits to and from each of the variants that Goldberg explores. His is a hybrid of all these variants and he simply can not be pinned down, eliminating any reasonable certainty that his goals are limited only to “soft” socialism, European-style. Complicating this philosophical erraticism is his personal erraticism; he has from his campaign forward, made many remarks ( “stopping the rise of the seas”, “I was born because of Selma”, “you will experience an epiphany…”) that, in hair-raising-on-the-back-of-neck fashion, suggest that he is mentally unstable and unhealthy; we are truly in uncharted territory with him. I can guess that even the powers-that-be that created the Obama “brand” and exploited 0′s mental foibles for a political/social agenda have given some belated thought as to 0′s ability to impose self-limitation.

My brain and my gut both tell me that 0 is, at minimum, Marxist, if not downright Soviet-inspired. He is the “perfect storm” of intellectual immaturity, malignant narcissism, and intractability. Reason suggests that he may try to impose something more malevolent that “generic” socialism.

It’s all by design, Gail. And there’s definitely a reason for Obama’s actions. We will all see soon enough.

Here’s a good one for you– “What’s more important: Liberty or the Entity that Protects It?”
