Assigned Reading: WH Fires Back After Cheney Calls CIA Probe ‘Political’
(FROM: Fox News)
You know, on this one, I gotta say that the former vice president may have only been partially correct. Is the Justice Department’s decision to investigate and possibly prosecute CIA officials for the enhanced interrogation of terrorists political? Absolutely. But–as much as I don’t want to say this about Cheney–it would be naive to think that this wasn’t somehow rooted in ideology, too.
Of course, the Obama administration decided to pull the trigger on the CIA probe because the American people had been pulling the plug on the administration’s plans to pull the plug on grandma. The health care reform measure was getting hammered everywhere, so the time was ripe for distraction.
Remember, though, that this is an administration which taped its first on-camera, sit-down interview for Arab television, and that this is a president who has felt it necessary to embark on a worldwide apology tour, who has had no problem sitting through 45-minute-long lectures on America-as-the-Devil by South American leaders, and whose first move was a knee-jerk reaction to close the facility at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. It’s not that Barack Obama and his flunkies don’t “get it” when it comes to the fight against terrorism worldwide — they do. The problem is that, to them, America is a nation that needs to be taken down a notch, that America is a nation that asserts itself too much in world politics, and that America is inherently ignorant, arrogant, and unfair. America, to these people, can do no right.
The decision to look backward when it came to the CIA probe is not surprising. This administration has prided itself for acting against American interests in terms of business and commerce — why not act against American interests in terms of national security as well?
