With a nation teetering on the edge of possible recession, and with his wife in the trench fight of her political life–recent Gallup polls show that Barack Obama’s numbers jumped 11 points in the past week–on the campaign trail, former president Bill Clinton thought it would be a good idea to say THIS:
“We just have to slow down our economy and cut back our greenhouse gas emissions ’cause we have to save the planet for our grandchildren.”
So, let me get this straight, before the heat from my exploding head renders a polar bear homeless…
Forget for a moment that the debate on man-made global warming is not over.
Forget for a moment that the concept of man-made global warming, like the concept of “global cooling” backed by many of the very same people and scientists in the 1970s who wanted to spread soot on the polar ice caps, is just a environmentally-conscious facade for the advancement of global socialism.
This crowd is advocating that the United States of America should hinder its own economic growth in order to save the planet for our grandchildren, while China and India continue the exponential growth of their economies and pump out more CO2 and greenhouse gases than we ever would.
A few quick points before the frustration causes my face to melt like those Nazis in Raiders of the Lost Ark:
- We should not be even considering policies, mandates, and legislation which would cost this country billions and billions of dollars based upon a theory that remains just as unproven as the existence of Bigfoot. If we had tossed soot all over the polar ice caps in the 1970s as these very same people have advocated, where would we be today? I have no doubt that the Earth is indeed getting warmer, but I think that it is mighty egotistical of us to assume that we are doing it. Heck, Mars is getting warmer, and nobody is blaming Dennis Kucinich.
- Gosh, in all of this excitement, I forgot — with all of the talk of planet-saving, slowing down the economy, and blaming America first, are we talking about Bill Clinton’s recent comments, or are we talking about the McCain-Lieberman Climate Stewardship Act of 2003?
- All talk of CO2 and global warming aside, we need LESS government interference in our businesses and in our personal lives, not more. The mandates placed upon the auto industry, the measures proposed by Bill Clinton and by John McCain, all seem to put America at a disadvantage in every way possible.
I understand that we must be good stewards of this planet. I want a nice, green, clean environment for my daughter as well. However, I want her to grow up in America — an America with a strong economy, an America that leads the world in science, technology, and even in conservation.
If he truly wants to rein in the rising temperatures on this planet and not just drive us toward global socialism, maybe Bill Clinton can just put a muzzle on his former vice president and spare the atmosphere a good dose of hot air.
